How To Pick a Good Fishing Charter

July 31st, 2009

Anyone out there been to the Gold Coast in the State of Queensland, Australia? If you haven’t already, take up the opportunity to go on a Gold Coast fishing charter. You will be able to see the Gold Coast looking from the ocean side. But getting back to the point. To maximize your enjoyment and satisfaction you need to consider what you are getting when you choose a Gold Coast fishing charter operator.

Some customers choose a fishing charter according to price. But as with most purchases, whatever the product, you get what you pay for. It just happens to be that there is not a lot of price variation between Gold Coast fishing charter operators. However what does vary greatly is the quality of your experience. Many factors may influence the quality of your experience.

Who are the people taking up the chance to go on a Gold Coast fishing charter? They are predominantly first timers with a whole lot of expectations, that unfortunately are not always delivered. So what do the people want? They want to be comfortable with space to move around freely. They want to have a great social experience. They expect to catch a goodly number and size of fish. They expect a skilled, friendly and helpful crew to ensure they have a pleasant unforgettable experience.

A number of Gold Coast fishing charter operators have smaller aluminum craft that are rough riding and crowded. Customers have commented that they had to sit in the same place all day to fish. It is not a pleasant experience especially on those less than perfect weather days. Smaller boats are also limited in the ways that they can fish.

If you choose a smaller boat to go out on, you will probably find that customers will be fishing on both sides of the boat to avoid tangling lines. That might seem like no drama but has repercussions. It means that Gold Coast fishing charter captains need to be able to anchor in relatively shallow waters that provide less fishing options.

However, Gold coast fishing charter operators with larger fiberglass boats, who carry a similar number of passengers as the smaller boats, are big enough to fish on the one preferred side of the boat. Therefore they dont need to anchor up.

When you go on a Gold Coast fishing charter that supplies a bigger boat you will have the luxury of being able to move about and get shelter from inclement weather.

Furthermore, Gold Coast fishing charter operators that utilize the larger boats, offer customers a softer and more comfortable ride. Customers naturally have confidence in knowing that the boat can safely handle any weather conditions. There is enough space to take a break from fishing, have a chat with friends or sit back and enjoy a cold drink. In other words it makes your Gold coast fishing charter more than a fishing trip but a pleasant social experience.

Reasons Why So Many People Are Buying Fishing Kayaks

July 31st, 2009

More and more people are realizing that fishing kayaks are an ideal platform for fishing. Especially people that have the big super fast bass boats that do 70mph, and suck as much gas as a big rig truck, aren’t necessary to catch fish. A lot of them are looking at kayak fishing as a new way to be on the water, and catch fish. Pretty often, people are catching more bass from kayaks than they ever did on a stinkpot.

Fishing kayaks allow you to sneak and creep through the water, without being noticed by fish. You are also able to draft incredibly shallow, so you can even get back through the muck that the big boat guys are afraid of. We used to do it on our bass rig, but we had to wade fish the shore to get anything done.

This worked, for the most part. During spawning season, these fish don’t typically abandon their bed, so walking through the water won’t spook them. Any other time, good luck, or get a fly rod. But with fishing kayaks, you can see the bed from a farther reach, and are able to sneak up onto it. Fishing kayaks are incredibly stealthy, and this is helping their sales more than hurting it.

Another reason people are picking up so many fishing kayaks these days, is because of how easy it is to stow a kayak. With more than 3 or 4 kayaks you can easily store them upside down, tied to the ceiling in the garage. When was the last time you saw a boat you could do that with?

Owning more than a few boats, my fiance believes that people just don’t need this many. Fishing kayaks do teach people how to know which lures or fishing setups to bring along for the day, as you can’t bring everything with you, it is a quick lesson.

Paying for the expensive gas bill that comes along with a bass boat is a big factor in people buying fishing kayaks. On more than a few cases, I have blown a grand on gas over the weekend, just tootin around with the family. Once I sold that rig, it makes me kinda upset to imagine the investments we could have made with that money.

It is super expensive running big boats in todays economy, in other words. When gas was approaching $5 dollars a gallon, you can’t imagine how much we spent on just a weekend in fuel. Trolling motors were useless after an hour.

Times are getting tougher now a days, and more are starting to see that you can enjoy fishing kayaks for a very little investment. Fishing kayaks hold their value as well, especially if you purchase used, you can usually get what you paid for it when it comes time to sell.

Practical Features Of Waterproof GPS Handhelds To Benefit Modern Sportsmen

July 30th, 2009

GPS handhelds also benefits those who are fond of water activities like boating and kayaking. They can experience the basic features of waterproof GPS handhelds like calculating how far one location from another is, and displaying the latitude and longitude coordinates in a map.

This is all possible because GPS is already made waterproof for practical navigation and sports. Though they were originally intended for land use in military and government applications, technology enabled GPS to be functional in water despite its electronic components.

Though they used to be expensive, waterproof units are now available at an affordable price. For sea kayakers, it provides accurate data about their path in the middle of the sea. Bikers can also benefit from waterproof units because they encounter varying weather conditions aside from moist and humidity. It is also portable and easy to use, making it an indispensable navigational tool for sportsmen.

Some characteristics should be known before buying waterproof GPS handhelds. Such characteristics are used in specifications sheet, and are good comparison points between units. The following characteristics are not only applicable for waterproof units, but also to non-waterproof handhelds.

Waypoints: It is also called POI or Points of Interest. Waypoints are useful in storing landmarks and important locations along the trip. Sportsmen can store data about the location of their last campsite, or the coordinates where they changed directions. Some units can store 1000 waypoints, but for common usage, 500 will be enough. Waypoints are analogous to tree markings implemented by past sportsmen when in a forest. In addition, GPS units can do calculations on two waypoint data, or delete past waypoints to free some memory for another. Sophisticated units have the feature to exchange waypoint data among GPS handhelds, allowing sportsmen to share their experience and past routes.

Topographical Maps: Most GPS can electronically display 2D or 3D maps, but older models do not. For such models, plotters will be required to have a printout of the map. Advanced models can go beyond normal topographic information by implementing Digital Elevation Model technology, commonly called as DEM. It is a feature to have better visualization of contours at different zoom levels. Moreover, handhelds can store new maps by accessing data cards and compact discs.

Wide Area Augmentation System: Commonly known as WAAS, augmentation system corrects the signal received by the GPS for distances beyond 10 feet. Enabling WAAS can increase accuracy up to five times.

Waterproof handhelds were expensive when they entered the market. During those times, it is considered as a luxury and only high-profile sportsmen can afford it. Now, even ordinary people and beginners can have it in a reasonable price. Non-water sports also benefit from it because of exposure to weather changes and humidity. In addition, it is portable and user-friendly, making it an essential navigation and sports equipment rather than a luxury.

5 Baits You Must Have In Your Ultralight Bass Fishing Arsenal!

July 29th, 2009

Time after time, with ultralight bass fishing, I get asked about what lures work best, what colors are best, how to work this lure or that lure. Every now and then, I even get asked about some expensive scam lures, and breaks my heart. Trust me, I had all of the same questions that you had when I began. I have taken the time to break down 5 known classic baits that catch fish, period. These baits have been around for a long time, and are here to stay.

Up to bat first is our all time favorite, and a true classic, the plastic worm. This bait was concocted up back in 1949 by Nick Creme in his basement. These baits have been putting more fish in livewells longer than most of us have been alive. In most areas you fish, you can get away with a 4incher in either the black/blue (junebug) or green/black flake colors.

Second up is the Rapala Floating Minnow. The jointed version of this lure acts like a topwater spook type bait, but when you reel faster it acts like a shallow diving crankbait. Either way, when the fish are active, this is one of my go-to baits. One thing I do like about the floating minnow is the ability to dead stick it. I have caught more fish, taking a break and talking, then moving it again, than any other presentation. The F4 size in silver with black back is a perfect color in just about any water.

The grub is also a classic hit with many. I prefer grubs in the 2inch size, even though they don’t have the meaty appearances of most baits, they do catch fish. The small body with the waving tail is often times exactly what the fish prefer. The presentations are unlimited with this bait, from the top of the water column to the bottom. You could even burn it like a buzzbait for a new presentation. I like the green/black with the chartreuse tails, using a black ball jig head with no skirt.

Booyah’s Pond Magic 3/16oz spinnerbait is the next lure you have to have. We all know how important spinnerbaits are in catching bass. You can slow roll them along the bottom, fast enough to get the blades moving. You can also burn it just below the waters surface, these things are guaranteed fish catching lures. The orange/red/yellow color is excellent for dirty water, with the white one with copper blades being great for stained water.

Last up is the jig head with a rubber or silicone skirt on it. These baits have been around for a long time, and are known big fish catchers. Ultralight bass fishing methods catch you a lot more fish, this is true, but skirted jigs still weed out the smaller fish. When you are out on your next pond fishing trip, tie on a jig. You determine the types of fish that you catch.

Heres Why Fishing Rod Length Plays A Role When Ultralight Bass Fishing

July 28th, 2009

This question comes up often. What length rod should I use for ultralight bass fishing? It isn’t an easy answer though. There is a couple things to consider about length when choosing a new rod.

Some fishermen argue that having a rod in the shorter ranges, say 4′6″, or 5′0″ lineup, allow you to toss your lures a farther distance. This is something that shows to me, that these fishermen haven’t used a long rod in ultralight fishing before.

Stout rods have a great backbone on them, and are nice for fishing in areas where you might need to pitch or flip because of the debris. These rods will give you the best accuracy of any of the rods, but the casting distance is limited greatly.

Rods used in ultralight bass fishing that are around 5 and a half feet, to 6 feet long are generally considered neutral or balanced when you talk about distance, accuracy, and backbone. These rods do generally well in all 3 categories, provided you go with a good manufacturer.

Accuracy is downgraded slightly going to these lengths, but a 6′0″ rod with a nice backbone makes a great tight area flipping stick for lighter weighted jigs. When the fish in the area you are targeting are known to be smaller, this technique will beat others time and time again.

These rods fall into the general use category, because of the accuracy and casting distance, along with the strength in the backbone of the rod. Only experienced fishermen will be able to notice the difference between the different lengths of rods, however, so choose the one that suits your fishing areas best.

The longest of the ultralight rods, 6 1/2 foot and longer provide the longest distance for casts. This is good for throwing spinnerbaits or topwaters, you can get them going so far that it is hard to see the little baits!

These long rods kill your accuracy however, which is why they should be used for open water casting and swimming baits. You can really burn spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with these long rods, not to mention unloading your spool from casting so far!

Portable GPS Fish Finders

July 27th, 2009

Brief Explanation and History of Fish finders: Fish finders are basically a type of SONAR (sound navigation and ranging). Fish finders use active (rather than passive which does not produce the sound) sonar to detect fish. Fish finders also detect the bottom of the ocean or lake, and everything else that reflects the sound beam.

The portable fish finder is a solution to the fore stated problem of finding the fish. This new technological advancement will enable fishers to fish by their own rules on their own terms. What fisherman or woman would not like a piece of that? Yes the portable fish finder is the fish finder of the future, and the future is knocking on our doors.

It is very possible to have a good day without the fish finder. However, a chance of a good day is enhanced with a fish finder that is easy to carry. More fish could get caught when technology is used to take advantage of where fish may bite. A portable fish finder is just that kind of solution. Having good bait and using good fishing technique is the most important part of fishing, but having a portable fish finder optimizes fishing results for anglers. The portable fish finder could be just one missing piece of the puzzle for a successful fishing trip for those who fish.

Any avid angler has multiple fishing rods and bait. What more does an angler need to catch fish? Bobbers, tackle box, and other tools inside the tackle box for fishing is what most people would be quick to answer. One thing that could be added for an angler is a portable fish finder to locate fish. Normally an angler needs to guess where fish may be located and where they might bite. When fishing on lakes and bays, the portable fish finder locates fish like a global positioning system locates places. For those who fish at lake cabins on a boat or a dock, a portable fish finder is a must-have to.

The newer models of fish finder have a great sophisticated type of look. They are so compact and light they easily slip into the palm of your hand like a cell phone. Most on the market come with a LCD display for top quality imaging. And, believe it or not, they have become increasingly less a toy of the rich and are highly affordable. Good ones start at around $59.98. Just looking at the price I am sure your fishing blues are clearing up.

Fishing at the dock, lakes, and bays can require patience to determine if fish will bite because sometimes fish are just not in the area despite using good fishing technique and bait. A portable fish finder also can determine the size of the fish that is displayed on the fish finder screen. The first things needed to go fishing are fishing rods and bait that should work to catch the fish an angler is looking to catch.
