Fly Fishing Gear - The Essentials

August 30th, 2009

The term fly fishing gear can be used to refer to anything in your fly fishing supplies. In this article, well discuss various pieces of fly fishing gear that is important to have on hand. You already know you need a fly fishing rod and reel, but there are much more involved in your fly fishing gear.

You will need a good collection of flies in your fly fishing tackle box. The fly is usually and artificial bait used to trick the fish into biting the hook. Different fish will prefer different bait, some will float on the water while other types of flies might be meant to sink below the water.

Next important thing is the type of fishing line you will be using. In fly fishing the weight of the line is very important, as it is used to cast the fly out, unlike regular saltwater and freshwater fishing with conventional rods. You will have to make sure that the line will fit the reel and work with it properly.

The majority of fly fisherman will stand in the water when they are fishing, also referred to as wading. For this you will have to invest in a pair of waders, which can be extremely cheap or very expensive. You will have to decide what conditions you primarily be in when you are looking to buy a pair of waders.

Another part of the fishing outfit you should have on top of the waders is a fishing vest. This makes it convenient to store some of your fly fishing tackle in. This allows you to have quick access to flies and other things, instead of returning to shore every time you have to make an adjustment.

Besides having hooks and flies in your fishing vest, you will also need a good pair of fishing pliers. These are necessary to pull the hook out of the fishes mouth. Since fly fishing is mostly catch and release you will have to release the fish in a timely fashion to ensure that it will survive, fishing pliers are very necessary to properly remove a hook from a fish.

Another thing that you can have as a part of your fly fishing gear, but not absolutely necessary, is a water proof camera. Nothing will help you remember those fly fishing trips like a picture, especially if you land a big one!

Of course there are other things that can have as apart of your fly fishing gear set up, such as nets and gloves, along with other stuff. But if you are just starting out these are the essential things that you will need to start fly fishing.

The Fishing Piers Of Fort Desoto

August 30th, 2009

There are lots of things that you can do at Fort Desoto Park, which is located in Saint Petersburg Florida, but the primary thing I will be talking about is the fishing that can be done there.

If you have a boat you will find no trouble in finding a ramp to launch it from. They are scattered all through out the park, and once you are in the water there are many spots that you can anchor away can catch some fish at.

Not everyone has the money to own a boat though, so that is why there are two great fishing piers that are at the park. The fishing piers are called the Gulf Pier and the Bay pier, both of them can offer excellent saltwater fishing all year round.

The Gulf Fishing Pier is the larger of the two piers, and it also has a bait and tackle shop there, the hours vary but for the most part they are open between 10 am and 4 pm. You will see that it is usually always packed with fishermen no matter what time of the day or night it is.

Some of the fish you can expect to catch while fishing off the Gulf Pier are snapper, grouper, sharks, sting rays and many other types of fish. If you go to the Gulf Pier during the day, you will most likely get a chance to see some dolphins swimming, just be careful and try not to hook up with one.

The other fishing pier that is in the park is called the Bay Fishing Pier, which is slightly smaller than the Gulf Pier. This is where all the tour boats will drop off and load tourist to take them on various types of boat trips that the park offers. None the less it is also an excellent place to catch some fish.

For night time fishing I recommend fishing at the Bay Pier. For one it is not as windy, and you do not need as heavy fishing tackle as it has docks that are close to the water. During the day they have a tackle shop also where you can purchase bait and stuff.

The fishing piers are located at the southern most part of the island, and they are open to fishermen 365 days a year, all day and all night. At night they are well illuminated which helps you cast and make rigs, and also will attract schools of fish to the bright spots in the water.

Fishing In Florida - Why It’s So Great

August 28th, 2009

When it comes to saltwater fishing, I would say that the sunny state of Florida takes the crown. There are many types of fish that are biting all year round because of the warm water. Some of the main attractions for fishermen are the Florida Keys, the everglades, and Fort Lauderdale.

Some of the fish you can expect to catch in Florida are grouper, snapper, snook, sheepshead, redfish, sharks, along with many others. Although fishing offshore can be wonderful and offer big fish, you can get good results fishing inshore also.

Some of the options you might want to look into if you do not have a boat is fishing from a pier. There are many fishing piers up and down both coasts of Florida, and they all provide excellent fishing for anglers year round. Some of them will charge you money some of them wont, one of the more famous fishing piers in Florida lies in Fort Desoto.

Surf fishing also provides excellent fishing if the conditions are right. Some of the conditions that I consider to be good are if there are rocks, and not many people swimming around. Also it is best to fish from the beach when the water is not extremely choppy.

If you have access to a dock, specifically one that has a light shining in the water then this will make great for some night fishing. Snook can almost always be found around a dock that has a light on at night time, along with sheepshead and snapper.

With thousands of bridges in Florida, there is always a spot to do some inshore saltwater fishing. Not all bridges allow you to fish from them, but you can usually fish under them too. Some great bridges to fish from are the old sunshine skyway bridge in Saint Petersburg and the 7 mile bridge in the Keys.

As you can see there are plenty of ways and places to fish inshore in Florida. You may not be able to get fish as big as if you were out at sea, but this is definitely a cheaper alternative to either hiring a charter or investing the money into a boat.

Traeth Bychan Beach, Quiet, Sheltered East Anglesey Beach

August 28th, 2009

Down a narrow, winding lane off the A5025 north of Benllech is Traeth Bychan beach, a small, cosy, sheltered beach facing eastwards. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of the Great Orme and Liverpool Bay, Puffin Island, and behind the heights of Llanddona and on the mainland, the Carneddau peaks.

Traeth Bychan is rocky on each side of the cove, giving way to a mixture of gravelly sand and small pebbles as the beach reaches up to the small stone and concrete boat park. This quiet location is the home of Red Wharf Bay Sailing and Watersports Club, and when we arrived on this occasion there were a number of dinghies and motor craft being towed up from the water, while a fishing boat waited for its trailer to arrive.

At the dinghy park on this beach there are Lasers, Toppers, Mirrors, GP14’s and other classes. The beach faces the east and so is ideal for launching boats, when the prevailing wind on Anglesey is from the south west. When we arrived here the sun was out and some keen, though tired, sailors were helping guide a vehicle with launch trailer into the water.

Around the back of the beach are some interesting rock formations and above these thick grassy steep slopes and from here emerges the Anglesey Coastal Path route running from Benllech in the south to Moelfre in the north. The coastal path is well signposted and there is a gate on the left as you approach the beach down the hill, next to a small cottage which is built just above the rocks and the high water mark.

Traeth Bychan cafe is about 25 or so metres up from the beach on your left and it sells ice cream, cold and hot drinks and snacks. You will also see the public car park adjacent while on the bank behind the cafe as well as on the opposite side of the lane are static caravans. These are a good spot for those wanting to walk the coast or get to the beach quickly.

During the autumn and winter when boating activity is usually much reduced, this beach is a very peaceful and relaxing spot from which to appreciate the coastline and sea views. There is a piece of maritime history attached to Traeth Bychan beach which may be of interest to some visitors.

Built in Cammell Laird ship yard in 1938, the “T” class submarine HMS Thetis left the Mersey on 1 June 1939 with a crew of 103, sailing out to Liverpool Bay to carry out some tests. Some unusual and catastrophic events took place while she was submerged and 99 men lost their lives. A few months later, the Thetis was refloated and brought onto Traeth Bychan beach.

Whether you come here on a fine, clear winter’s day for a walk across the beach, or in the heat of a summer’s day are launching your dinghy for coastal exploration, the memory of Thetis and her lost crew will remain.

Leatherman Crunch: The Unique Multi-Tool

August 27th, 2009

Leatherman is a well known brand in multi-tools. They have become the standard. Leatherman’s innovated pliers design have been copied by many. The Leatherman Crunch introduced a new pliers design. Locking pliers also know as vice-grips. Anyone that uses tools often knows how valuable locking pliers are. It is like having a third hand. While needle nose pliers are useful, vice grips allow you to free up your grip and apply more leverage on clamping.

The Crunch is smaller than the Wave. The design is well though out. It pops open and assembles in seconds. When assembled, you get a very nice vice-grip that functions well. The Crunch comes with Leatherman’s standard 25 year warranty. That’s if the Crunch fails in workmanship within 25 years, Leatherman will fix it or replace it for free. I don’t see the Crunch failing on me any time soon.

The Crunch is equipped with 13 tools but I will only mention a few. The main tools you will be using are the vice-grips, the serrated blade, the flat-head screwdriver, and the file. The rest of the tools are slightly redundant. The Crunch does not have nearly the amount of tools as a Charge but I would consider the Crunch as a complimentary multi-tool. It is best coupled with another small multi-tool. Some people do not need certain tools so it’s best to get the tools you only need. For instance, some people do not drink wine often and they do not see the need for a corkscrew.

While the Crunch lacks tools, the main tool makes up for it. Through the function of it’s design, I can see how difficult it must be to incorporate many additional tools into the Crunch. For this reason, I am satisfied with the Crunch. I have other multi-tools and the Crunch is very good in comparison. What I did not like was the redundancy. For instance, I have 3 different sizes of flat-head screwdrivers. I do not need all of that. What nice though, the Crunch can be expanded. You can unscrew the adjustment knob all the way to reveal a hex driver slot. This makes for a very handy bit driver. Nice addition to have.

The Crunch is a great complimentary multi-tool. Having something is better than nothing and the Crunch can meet many needs from day to day. The crunch is perfect when coupled with the Victorinox Soldier. While not as complete as a Wave or a Charge, the Crunch can still hold it’s own in the sea of multi-tools. You can find the Crunch on sale for about $50.

A Better Look At Bass Fishing

August 26th, 2009

Out of all the types of fishing there are these days, bass fishing stays on the top when it comes to freshwater. There is a lot of money to be made in bass fishing from tournaments, boat sponsors, along with many other bass related stuff that is on the market, such as clothes and other types of fishing gear.

There are many places in freshwater where you can find bass at, for example you can find them in rivers, lakes, streams or ponds. The best place out of these to catch bass would be a river, especially a spot in a river that has a change in current. Obstructions like rocks, fallen trees or stumps make great places for bass to be around.

When it comes to the types of bass, the largemouth is the one that most bass fisherman are out to catch. The reason is they get the biggest and they also put up one heck of a fight. 10 pound and above largemouth bass are very common to catch.

Although bass are very fun and popular to catch, they are not the only fish in the river. Two other types of freshwater fish that are sought out by anglers are catfish and bullheads. There are a couple of reasons for this, as they are very fun to catch, and also they are very delicious to eat also. They still do not compare to bass in popularity though by a long shot.

For freshwater fishing, all you really need is a pole and maybe a can of worms to catch some fish. When it comes to bass though, it gets little more technical than just that. Bass have been fished for hundreds of years, and we still do not know exactly what they like, we have a good idea though.

There are innumerable techniques and types of tackle available to practice the sport of bass fishing. For a beginner, it is advised to gather some more basic tools to get started. Some suggestions point towards acquiring a 10-pound line, suitable for the average sizes and weights of this species.

If you are fishing for bass for the first time, then artificial bait would be my recommendation. Unless you really know what you are doing you will have a better chance at landing a bass using a lure. One of the more popular lures for catching bass is the Spinnerbait lure, which is used by professionals and beginners.

Millions of anglers go after bass when they are fishing, but very few will actually keep the bass, as they are not considered to be great food fish. One reason why someone might keep a largemouth bass would be taxidermy, other than that bass are usually always released.
